I lay my head on Ian’s chest, feeling the hot breeze sigh over my bare back as I drifted in and out of alertness. Ian’s chest rose and fell as he snored flippantly.

I heard a thump, but it was probably the mail man. Ian said his landlords were away on vacation, so we had the house to ourselves. I closed my eyes again.

Then loud banging yanked her out of our stupor. Who was here?

“Someone’s here!” I hissed at Ian, who had jumped from the bed, his face a deep red as he struggled to pull his pants on. Legs still wobbly, I fumbled for my clothing, which trailed from the door to the bed. I barely yanked my sweatpants over my hips when someone hit the door hard enough the wood cracked.

The banging pounded louder. “Police! Open up! We know you are in there!”

Ian froze. His face turned white as a ghost, his big, powerful body trembling. “Oh, fuck.” His chin trembled.

“Ian?” I asked. My heart began to beat. “What’s going on?”

He was drenched in sweat.

I turned to him desperately. “What do they want? Ian, what is this?”

The banging ended, and I heard the shuffle of booted feet on the landing outside. The male voice on the other side went from aggressive to stony and forbidding. “Last chance before we break the door down!”

Ian couldn’t look at me as he yanked on his jeans. “I’m sorry. Dany, I’m so sorry.” His voice was low, startled. “I didn’t think this would happen.”

Ian, what did you do? What did you do? I trembled, my heartbeat banged in my ears. I couldn’t believe this. “What did you do?” I asked again as the door to the room smashed open right off its hinges as several officers filled the room. I screamed as I yanked the sheets over my upper body.

Ian quickly hissed, “you know nothing!”

“Brody Crane?” one of them shouted.

Ian nodded slowly.

“Put your hands where we can see them! You, Ma’am, don’t move!”

I froze, trembling.

Ian slowly held up his hands. “Don’t hurt her,” he said. “She knows nothing.”

“Ian, what’s going on?” I remembered the story Ian told me about Brody, his dead best friend. His car had gone over a cliff and they never found his body. Why were they calling Ian by that name? “Please talk to me!” I begged.

“I’ll go quietly. Just leave her alone. ” Ian avoided my gaze.

Two officers pointed guns toward him. “On your hands and knees. Now.” He complied as they twisted his arm and cuffed him.

The one in charge moved to my side, tossing me Ian’s black t-shirt. “Get dressed. Move it.” I hurried and retrieved the shirt. Everything was a blur—rawer and more terrifying than any nightmare.

I dressed while Ian lay on the cluttered floor in handcuffs. They were taking him. And what would happen to me? I fought the tears threatening to emerge from under my eyelids. I was so confused. What was going on?

“I’m sorry, Danyelle,” he choked the words. “I’m sorry I lied.
